Amazing Chinese Characters (90) Practice - 习(習)

The shell bone script for character Practice is


on the top, there is a Feather (Post 89)


on the bottom, there is a Sun (Post 4)


A young bird opens its wings under the sun to practice flying, it needs to try again and again to learn how to fly, which is meaning of Practice.



It is an ideogram character.

which is half of the Feather, it may be better to be the simplified character of Feather (羽). It is not good to be a simplified Practice (習), obviously 习 destroys the ideogram of character 習。So it is not a good simplified character. 

Now, 习 has other meanings: get used to, habit - something people need long time to get or become comfortable with.

Amazing Chinese Characters (88) Tolerate - 忍

The big seal script for character Tolerate is


the top is character Blade (Post 87), the bottom is character Heart (Post 24). Put a blade on a person's heart, the person feels very painful but can't move because he/she may get more injury or even be killed. He/she has to tolerate the pain. It is an ideogram character.

Amazing Chinese Characters (87) Blade - 刃

The shell bone script for character Blade is

We can see there is a small circle on the side of the knife, the circle is an indicator or pointer to point the blade of the knife. But the circle should be in lower position, why it is so high is unknown.

Now it is a short line in the middle of the knife, the short line is the indicator or pointer. In comparison with the real knife, it should be on the bottom side. But we don't know what the ancient knife looks like, it should be different from those we see today.

Amazing Chinese Characters (86) Bored - 闷(悶)

The big seal script for character Bored is

the top is character Door (Post 15),


 the bottom is character Heart (Post 24)

a heart inside the door means that the person's heart is stuck in a small room because he/she has to stay at home for long time. He/she is bored, just like the experience people have under stay at home order during coronavirus pandemic.

Sometime, it also means that people feel difficult to breath because the room windows are all closed and no air conditioning, no fresh air in the room.

The difference is from that between traditional Door 門 and simplified Door 门。

Amazing Chinese Characters (85) Scoop - 舀

The big seal script for character Scoop is


the top is a hand, the bottom is a container with open on top, which means that a hand is trying to grab a handful of rice out of the container, the same as Scoop.

The meaning of the character changed to scoop a ladle of water most of the time, people say "scoop a cup of/a ladle of rice" too. The major change is to use scoop not hand alone even though the character still has the hand on the top.

Amazing Chinese Characters(84)Leisure - 闲(閑)

The bronze script for character Leisure is


there is a Door


outside and Wood


inside.

Wood inside Door is Leisure because people who could stay home gardening, have the leisure. Here the Wood means grass, flower, or/and tree. Or we can think it as people sit in front of the door, watching the trees.


In comparison with Stuck (Post 83)


which the Wood inside a small box or small room without access to outside, the Wood couldn't grow, stuck inside.

The Door can be door of a room, a house, even a yard, which are big. Also, Door means that there is an access to outside, so the Wook is not stuck, could grow.

Amazing Chinese Characters (83) Stuck - 困

The shell bone script of Character Stuck is

The outside rectangle is a small room or a box. A tree (Wood) in a small room without door and windows means Stuck because the tree could not grow high and big, it is struck by the small room, may be very small like a box. It is an ideogram character.

similar to small seal script but all bent lines become straight lines.

The right is Dagger-axe, the left 口 is city. Ancient Chinese thought that a city protected by army is country.

on the right, which is Dagger-axe (Post 80), means weapon or army too. A circle with a dot inside is on the left with a short horizontal line below.

To found a country, you should have armed forces to defend enemy, which is represented by Dagger-axe. The short line on the left bottome represents the land, and the circle with a dot is the Sun. Army, land, and sun form a country.

changed a lot. First there is a big rectangle surrounding the inside where are a Dagger-axe character, a small circle and a short horizontal line.

Now the country is explained as "Army, land, population, and border". The big rectangle is the border, the circle is population. Which represents the meaning of Country much better.

the inside 玉 is jade, very expensive. But border with jade is not good to represent a country. So this simplified character lost its original ideogram features to reduce the strokes.

which is formed by a Door and a Person inside. A person inside or under the door means Flash. Why?

I should point out that you can't think that the Person is sitting inside, what you should think is that people saw a person who flashed through the door gap.

which is a person in a box or small room. The room or box has no gap, an isolated place.

闪 is used with 电(Electricity, Post 247) to form a combination 闪电, means Lightning.
