The top is 乃,meaning Breast. The bottom is a Child - 子  (Post 21). The child is not isolated in belly, just under the breast, which is a simplified picture of pregnant.

which is a little bit away from the picture, more straight lines. As always, the small seal script is more like language, not as artistic as shell bone and big seal scripts. But it is still similar to the old scripts.

which still has some similarity to the old scripts, even though you may not think it as a pot if you didn't see the old scripts.

The difference between the 皿 and 壶 -壶 is one of the 皿,  and 壶 is just a container for water only.

Amazing Chinese Characters (143) Breakthrough - 闯

The big seal script for Breakthrough is


the top part


it a door.

The bottom one


is a horse.

The character means a horse behind door, which is breakthrough? It is a little bit confusing.

I think what the ancient Chinese wanted to say is the dynamic moment when the horse rush to breakthrough at the door, not a horse stands quietly behind a door or inside a stable.

Its small seal script is


The door is much longer than the big seal script, which 100% cover the horse inside. We should still think it as a dynamic moment when the horse rush to breakthrough the door.

which is a piece of roof tile.





It is a pictography character.

the clerical script changed a lot, but still has similarity to the older scripts.

Amazing Chinese Characters (141) Can - 缶

The shell bone script for Can is


Actually it is a picture of mortar with pestle. The ancient mortar was pottery, so it presented "Can". It is a pictography character.

It is similar to the older scripts.

It is a character, but it is used as a radical related to pottery, which means as long as there is 缶 in one character, it must be something related to pottery or earthenware.
