The original meaning of the character is Barn, but now it means Warehouse including Barn, normally adding an adjective 粮（Grain) to form 粮仓 -  phrase to mean Barn. Chinese had changed to use phrases formed from exist characters for new meanings at least more than 2000 years ago, which does avoid making new difficult characters. Chinese use more phrases than single characters in modern Chinese.
